Researchers from the University of California, Davis, studied the effect of Viagra on the risk of heart attack and stroke. The findings showed that men who were taking the drug had a 30 per cent higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to men who were not taking the drug. This is the latest study to test the safety of Viagra, the first drug to treat erectile dysfunction, in the UK.
In an open-label, randomised trial of more than 3,500 men with erectile dysfunction, the researchers found a statistically significant increase in the risk of developing a heart attack and stroke. However, this risk appeared to be relatively low for Viagra users, who were also using other erectile dysfunction medications.
"Viagra has been around for quite a while now and has been a very effective treatment for erectile dysfunction," said lead author Dr David Hegarty.
"Our study indicates that taking Viagra while on this medication can cause serious health risks, such as heart attack and stroke."
The study, published in the journalThe Lancet,is the first to show that Viagra does not pose an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, but rather an increased risk of heart failure.
The drug, known generically as sildenafil, is the first of its kind, and has been shown to work on the arteries of the lungs and heart, improving blood flow and lowering symptoms of high blood pressure.
"Our study shows that taking Viagra while on this medication can cause serious health risks, such as heart attack and stroke," Dr Hegarty said.
"We are seeing more and more men taking the medicine, but we do not know how serious they are."
In the UK, Viagra has been on the market since 1998, and has been prescribed for erectile dysfunction in men under 18.
The study, which involved a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, has already been approved for sale in the UK by the MHRA, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in November 2003.
It's not known whether it's effective in other countries where Viagra is used.
